3 Hairstyles for the Traveling Naturalista
For all my natural sisters, do you travel with your natural hair? As much as I love my natural hair, I choose to not travel with it, in its natural state. I refuse to! Well, I did it once and I will never do it again. In 2017, I decided to travel to Mexico with my natural hair. I pre-planned my hairstyles and I was ready to SLAY! Unfortunately, things didn't go as planned I spend most of the time in the hotel room twisting and doing my hair. Ain’t nobody got time to do the L.O.C method, wash the chlorine out of your hair, deep condition, twist, untwist, fluff and all that extra stuff on vacation! I like to be out in the sun exploring and enjoying my time! The high maintenance of natural hair is the exact reason why I do not travel with my hair out. Not sure what I was thinking for Mexico.
My favorite hairstyles for vacation are protective styles! They don’t require as much maintenance and time. You can easily get up and go! With that, you have more time to spend enjoying your vacation. After all, that is what you paid for! I just got my hair twisted for my 11 day vacation to 3 countries! So, let’s get right into it! Here are my top 3 protective styles for travels:
I love wigs! All you have to do is slap it on and go! I wore a wig on our trip to Panama City, Panama and it was everything! I enjoyed taking it off at the end of the day or at night. I still took time aside to oil my scalp here and there throughout the trip (we must still take care of our natural hair under the wig). I scored this super inexpensive wig at my local beauty supply store. It was a straight wig with no curls, the night before my trip I used flexi rods to curl the hair and dipped the entire wig in boiling hot water and VOILA! I got curls for days! Honey, you would have thought I had a sew it with a closure! Hello!
2- Braids or Twists
Braids are always the go to hairstyle for travels. I usually choose braids or twists for longer travels. For instance when I went to South Africa I chose to do braids and they were perfect! Braids and twist are low maintenance and are versatile, you can choose to put them up or leave them down. The only downside to braids and twists is that they can be costly; however, they can last anywhere from four to six weeks. If you are going on a long trip they will be worth it!
Wigs and braids are cool and all but I LOVE crochet! This is my all time favorite protective hairstyle. For 90% of my trips I do crochet! It is easy to maintain and it doesn’t cost or require much. You can easily find a tutorial on youtube and do it yourself! I love the versatility of crochet hairstyles. You can put it up, leave it down or wrap it up with a head wrap. If you are creative the possibilities are endless!
